Interview with Sydney Irving

Sydney

The artist’s new EP ‘Relax With Fiends’ is out now

Sydney Irving is a singer-songwriter from New York, she’s only 17 years old and she already released her 5th EP. It was really cool to chat with her and to know more about her interesting background. Link in bio for the interview.

HELLO SYDNEY, CONGRATULATION ON YOUR EP ‘RELAX WITH FIENDS’. TELL US MORE ABOUT THE RELEASE BACKGROUND AND YOUR STORY SO FAR.

Hey! Thank you! “Relax With Fiends” is my first adventure into the lands of indie rock n roll. The EP has five songs and I wrote the album on my bedroom floor with my trusty Breedlove guitar. The name “Relax With Fiends” comes from one time when I walked into my little sister’s room where she had one of those light up signs that you can spell words out on. She had tried to write “Relax With Friends”, but instead wrote “Relax With Fiends”. It sounded pretty rock n roll and it kept popping back into my head, so it became the album title.

WHAT ARE THE ARTISTS AND GENRES THAT INSPIRED YOUR EP THE MOST?

I love great songwriters like Tom Petty and Jim Morrison of The Doors. Lyrics are definitely always at the forefront when I’m writing. Genre-wise, I love singer songwriter acoustic guitar based songs and I love rock n roll, so I wanted to do something along those lines.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START PLAYING GUITAR AND SING, AND WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START A MUSIC CAREER?

I received my first guitar for my ninth birthday and started lessons with my buddy, Loren a little bit later. When I found out about Taylor Swift’s Red album, I really found a big interest in writing songs and performing for people. I started out playing at open mic nights and started writing songs when I was 12.

YOU ALREADY HAD MANY RELEASES ON YOUR SHOULDER FOR BEING JUST 17 YEARS OLD. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR SONGWRITING APPROACH HAS CHANGED DURING THESE YEARS?

Thank you. My first album came out when I was 14. The first experience of writing,  recording and releasing an album seemed extremely daunting at the time. Like most things the process improves the more you do it. My approach really has not changed as far as the process goes. The thing that changed is the content of the songs due to life experiences and experimentation.

WHEN DID YOU WRITE YOUR FIRST SONG, AND HOW DO YOU FEEL LISTENING BACK AT IT?

I was 12 and I was doing a summer rock camp where the kids were formed into bands and were able to perform their original music at the end for their families and friends. I got home one night and decided that I was going to write a song and sing it. I was wicked shy! I didn’t really talk much and never sang for anyone, nonetheless I wanted to sing the song for everybody, so I did.

HOW DO YOU FIND THE ACTUAL INDIE MUSIC SCENE IN NY AND WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST FROM NEW YORK IN GENERAL?

The Indie Music scene is alive and well in Syracuse. There are so many really great artists! To name a couple, Keep Up and The Ende Brothers are super cool!

WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN STORE FOR THE REST OF THE 2021?

Just this week, I released a new limited edition CD single for my newest single “All I Need Is You”! They are all hand signed and numbered 1 through 100. This summer is going to be full of lots of really awesome shows solo and with my band, Sydney Irving & The Mojo in NY, PA, and MA! If you’re in the area, I would love to see ya at a show! I also have a wicked fresh summer tune coming very soon!
