LÓN’s new Single ‘‘Earthquake’’ is out now
HELLO GUYS, GREAT TO HAVE YOU HERE. CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW SINGLE “EARTHQUAKE”, TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS RELEASE.
It is the second single from our upcoming EP album that will be released in early 2022. In the first recording session for this song Reykjavik got hit by an earthquake that shook the studio quite intensely. It felt like the house had been hit by a truck so the first reaction was to run out and see if everything was alright. When the nerves had calmed we got back inside and kept on recording the song. Since then the working title has been Earthquake which we then decided to keep. Even though the song is not about a physical earthquake it describes the feelings of new relationships and how falling for someone can shake our universe.
PREVIOUSLY THIS YEAR YOU PUT OUT ANOTHER SINGLE CALLED “MY FATHER. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THIS SONG INSTEAD?
My father is based on thoughts about parenthood and generations. How we inherit all the hopes and dreams, mistakes and fears from our parents and pass them on to the next generation. It also deals with the fact that when we get older we begin to see that our parents are frail human beings just like ourselves and that maybe we are slowly turning into them.
YOU JUST RELEASED TWO SINGLES BUT YOU ALREADY HAVE A SOLID AND DISTINCTIVE SOUND. HOW DID THE BAND FORM AND HOW DID YOU SHAPE YOUR PARTICULAR SOUND?
We have known each other for a long time. Me and Valdimar have been together in bands for over ten years and Ómar taught me to play guitar back in the days. Valdimar and Ómar have also played together on occasions. Then a few years ago were working together on a Christmas concert a decided to make a Christmas song. It was a really fun experience and the dynamic between the three of us was really good. After that, we always wanted to make some more music together. Then came the pandemic and we suddenly had empty schedules and that was the perfect opportunity to make it happen. We discovered that we all had a passion for making an acoustic-sounding album with some roots in folk music. We also knew that we didn’t want to make a typical folk album so we tried to incorporate some new sounds. Generally we just tried to make something that we would like to listen to.
WHAT’S THE MEANING OF “LÓN” AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THIS NAME FOR THE BAND?
LÓN has several meanings in Icelandic, all related to still or calm water. It just came up when we had a brainstorming session looking for a name for the project. It has some kind of internal calmness that we liked. We also started to record this album in a cabin on the shore of Þingvallavatn which is Iceland’s biggest lake. So we figured that a water-based name would fit perfectly.
WHAT ARE THE BANDS AND ARTISTS THAT INFLUENCED YOUR MUSIC PROJECT “LÓN” THE MOST?
There are many bands and artists that we love and I think everyone in our band has different influences. But there are a few artists that we have shared love for and seek inspiration from. For example: Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Big Thief, Nick Drake to name a few.
THE BAND IS BASED IN ICELAND, WORLDLY FAMOUS FOR ITS INCREDIBLE LANDSCAPES. IN YOUR LIVE VIDEO WE CAN GET A LITTLE TASTE OF THIS. “EARTHQUAKE” WAS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW THE FORCE OF NATURE CAN INFLUENCE A SONG. MORE GENERALLY, HOW DOES THE ICELANDIC LANDSCAPE AFFECT YOUR SONGWRITING?
It’s really hard to tell if or how the landscapes affect us. It’s just part of our environment and it has always been here so probably it has some effect on us as human beings. We really like to go out in nature hiking, fishing and camping. We also recorded a lot of our material in a cabin by a lake and that probably had some influence on the vibe of the songs.
HOW DO YOU FIND THE MUSIC SCENE IN ICELAND AND WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE NEW ARTISTS FROM THERE?
It’s pretty good. There are always some new bands coming up and lots of people are not afraid of trying new things or doing something original. It’s hard to pick out artists because there are so many good new ones. But we really like Salóme Katrín, Arny Margret and GDRN for example.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?
Now we are just focused on finishing our album and preparing for the release. Then we have some touring scheduled in february of 2022.
